Amnesty InternationalWho says the pursuit of human rights has to be limited to the physical realm? Amnesty International, well known for its worldwide efforts to halt human rights abuses over the past three and a half decades, has established a web presence to help the movement reach beyond the physical barriers to access information. With a global reputation as a relentless watchdog for human rights, Amnesty International claims over one million members, subscribers, and supporters in over 160 countries and territories. In pursuit of international protection of human rights, Amnesty International focuses specifically on advocating the release of all prisoners of conscience, fair and prompt trials for all political prisoners, and an end to torture and executions. These goals define the organization's mandate. "Amnesty International is convinced of the indivisibility and mutual dependence of all human rights," proclaims their website. Based on the principles outlined in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Amnesty International's policies include the right to freedom of expression, conscience and religion; the right to freedom from arbitrary arrest and detention, the right to a fair trial; the right to life, liberty and security of person; and the right not to be tortured. 1998's Digital Be-In focuses on Human Rights in Cyberspace extends the goals espoused by Amnesty International to the virtual world. While Amnesty International is primarily concerned with protecting people whose human rights have already been violated, the Digital Be-In focuses on ensuring a future in which the human right to access information will be free. |
