John Beresford

John Beresford is a long-time soldier in the drug wars. He began his counterculture activities in 1961, when he resigned his post as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the New York Medical College and founded the Agora Scientific Trust. Long before Leary advised college kids worldwide to tune in, turn on and drop out, the Agora Trust was the world's first research organization devoted exclusively to researching the scientific effects of LSD. In fact, the Trust began their work so early that LSD was still legal. Beresford spent the next few decades working in psychiatry until 1991 when he resigned and founded the Committee on Unjust Sentencing, a group devoted to spreading the word about the lengthy sentences handed down to those arrested for LSD use. Battling the drug wars has continued to be Beresford's focus. He has testified in front of the U.S. Sentencing Commission and spoken out on his passion in many forums. Beresford is also the curator of Pasadena's Albert Hoffmann Museum, the only scientific library in the world devoted to the study of LSD and psilocybin.
