Greenpeace
by John Trinkl
The name Greenpeace http://www.greenpeace.org conjures up images of a small band of embattled activists in
a rubber raft taking on a large whaling ship in an effort to stop
the slaughter of whales. But Greenpeace, one of the largest activist
environmental groups in the world, is far more than this.
It's goals are to:
1) Protect biodiversity in all its forms. 2) Prevent pollution
and abuse of the earth's ocean, land air and fresh water. 3) End
all nuclear threats.
4) Promote peace, global disarmament and non-violence.
It's in-your-face style of organizing was demonstrated recently
on Dec. 22 when Greenpeace activists in Bremenhaven, Germany blockaded
a planned loading of 59 kilograms of plutonium bound for a processing
plant in Scotland. http://www.greenpeace.org/~comms/97/nuclear/press/transdecember22.html Greenpeace has active campaigns against toxic chemicals, against
nuclear weapons and for alternatives to nuclear power, against
ocean dumping, against global warming, and campaigns to preserve
forest and for safeguards for genetic engineering. A multimedia
history http://www.greenpeace.org/vrmlrw is available on Greenpeace International's website http://www.greenpeace.org. Greenpeace USA's website http://www.greenpeaceusa.org describes the organizations current campaigns and gives news
updates http://www.greenpeaceusa.org/updates/updates_calendar.html.
