Chet Helms and Mad Dog

I MADE THIS BE-IN

There are a lot of seminal people here, people who were involved in the beginning and have survived, changing with the times but still keeping their hopes and dreams alive. Chet Helms is one, his long white hair and beard still in its perpetual state—in need of a trim— as he describes it. There might be something patentable there, though I'm not sure what it is yet. Chet was one of those involved in producing the original Human Be-In on January 14, 1967 in Golden Gate Park, though he went to England three days before so the closest he could get to attending was to speak to his wife on the phone from London that day. He made it to  this Digital Be-In, even though now he could actually witness it from afar by reading these updates as they’re posted and watching the video as it’s uploaded. It’s a different world, but as Chet says, "The message is still there but the means to disseminate it has changed. It’s easier to reach people. Where back then you needed thousands of dollars for a TV studio, now with a digital camera, a computer, and a little software you can have a world wide audience.” And it feels just like being here.
