Peter Mendes Black Light Banner Artist * Diablo Valley College - Graphic Arts

As of the past year I have found myself trying to apply my art skills within the Rave community. I have found this community to be a place where energies can be vented in a healthy form, a place where you belong, are wanted and can express your individuality. It contains a mixture of enthnicities from urban, suburban, broken homes, loving homes, parentless homes, comming together in a tribal dance to create common ground, (community). The rave community is about making new friends and family, learning about the different environments we are from, expressing our individuality in positive art forms as music, dance, paintings, visual light shows, technology, costumes, poetry, and spiritual writing. My artwork holds a deep and personal meaning to me. This meaning changes with every viewer. I am hoping that what the viewer sees holds meaning enough to help up lift them in anyway or form. Recently I have painted two pieces, the first being a circular mandala which took it's own shape as a six petal lotus flower. The lotus is known for it's symbolic qualities in Kundalini Yogis Seven Chakras.. A six petaled crimson lotus flower depicts the second chakra. This center is associated with water, the color white, the hands, the mantra van, a crocodile like animal (fertility), and the sense of taste. The second is a triptych altar piece with two border pieces and a central piece. The boarder pieces are composed of two lengthy crescent moon Celtic designs at top and bottom with my unity design in the center, consisting of people sitting in a circle arms locked. The center piece is similar with the central focus on the triptych in the center. A winter solstice sun god holds an interlacing circle comprised of hands grasping forearms in a circular motion. My triptych centers on the power of unity and how it is such a binding force within the rave community.
