Allen Cohen:

The Oracle, Jerry Garcia
and Organization

words by Rebecca Eisenberg

Allen Cohen, world-renown poet and editor, will speak briefly at the Be-In about the origins of the original Be-In, its meaning, and its relevance to 1990's digital culture, and he will also read selected poems in Elegy of Jerry Garcia.

Cohen, one of the organizers of the original Be-In, and editor of the highly acclaimed counter-culture newspaper, the Oracle, has always stood for organized concerted effort as an alternative to violent confrontation.

He sees the Internet as a potentially tremendously powerful force in assisting people to organize and take action, free of geographical restraints, in the 1990's and beyond. In order to achieve any goals, he says, people must come together from their different perspectives and organize in conscious joint action.

Organization, action, celebration and community those were some of the most important goals of the Original Be-in in the 1960's, and those same goals and purposes are what this remarkable visionary intends to share with this very 90's diverse group of community members today.
